Resource Description

This online, collaborative, 12-week course explores the specialty practice of Faith Community Nursing that combines professional nursing and health ministry. The course emphasizes health and healing within the faith community and the larger community. This Christ-centered, biblically-based course is derived from the curriculum endorsed by the Westberg Institute for Faith Community Nursing and includes the core concepts of spiritual formation, professionalism, shalom as health and wholeness, and community. The course provides additional materials supportive of the Christian Theology of Faith Community Nursing in accordance with an evangelical Christian worldview. It offers registered nurses with a strong spiritual faith the knowledge to implement and facilitate a Faith Community Nursing ministry. Participants will apply the principles they learn from this course to the dynamic nature of their faith community and its particular needs.

The course is divided into four units covering the following topics:

  • Unit I: SPIRITUALITY — History and Philosophy of Faith Community Nursing; Prayer; Healing and Wholeness; Self-care for the Parish Nurse; Spiritual Care.
  • Unit II: PROFESSIONALISM — Ethical Issues; Documenting Practice; Beginning Your Ministry; Legal Aspects; Communication and Collaboration.
  • Unit III: WHOLISTIC HEALTH — Health Promotion; Behavioral Health; Transforming Life Issues – Family Violence; Transforming Life Issues – Loss, Suffering, and Grief.
  • Unit IV: COMMUNITY — Assessment; Accessing Resources; Advocacy; Care Coordination.

Participants should plan to devote about 4-8 hours of work a week to the course, on at least two different days. The course is asynchronous, so it is not necessary for participants to be online at specific times. Along with individual interaction with the course material, a key part of the course is interaction between participants and with the facilitator through online forums each week. Upon completion of the course requirements, the nurse will receive credit for 40.5 contact hours, a Westberg Institute certificate of course completion, and a Westberg Institute Faith Community Nurse Pin.

Each participant must:

  1. Be a registered nurse with an active license in the state where they practice.
  2. Submit a completed Application Form (See application page here) as soon as possible to acknowledge your interest in taking this course.
  3. Submit the full Registration Fee by January 9, 2019. The registration link will be emailed to the nurse after his or her application is accepted by the course facilitator. Complete this step as soon after receiving the link as possible to guarantee your placement in the class. The course will be limited to 10 participants.

Course Facilitator:

This course will be facilitated by Shelly Rock, RN, BAN, MA.

Shelly has extensive experience in faith community nursing. She worked for 7 years as the nurse at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Stillwater, MN and for 5 years as the Director of the St. Croix Valley Faith Community Nurse Program out of the Lakeview Health Foundation in Stillwater, MN. Shelly completed her Master’s Degree from Bethel Seminary in March 2018 and the Westberg Institute’s Foundations for Faith Community Nursing Educator Course in August 2017. She has served on the ELIM CARE Faith Community Nursing board for 7 years and has recently moved to Northwest Iowa.

Course Creators:

This course of Foundations of Faith Community Nursing was created by Paula Lilja with technical consultation by Dr. Tom Cairns. Paula was the former Faith Community Nurse Coordinator and Educator for the Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA). Paula partnered with Nurses Christian Fellowship in 2004 for three years to teach their Christ-centered, biblically-based curriculum titled Faith Community Nursing: Connecting Faith and Health, which was derived from the Parish Nurse Basic Preparation Course (2004) developed by the International Parish Nurse Resource Center (IPNRC). She taught parish nursing classes to more than 150 nurses in churches and hospitals located in CA, MN, TX and FL. Paula began teaching the Foundation of Faith Community Nursing (2009) Online with EFCA Equip in 2012 through 2015 to more than 120 FCNs.

Paula is the Past President of the Texas Health Ministry Network, and serves with the FCN Network of the EFCA. She is the FCN Coordinator and Educator for EFCA ReachNational Compassion and Justice in their partnership with the Church Health Center (formerly with the IPNRC). Paula serves on the Board of Directors for Anchor Point Crisis Pregnancy Center in League City, TX and help to develop their Limited Medical Clinic.

Tom Cairns was a medical missionary with the EFCA for 19 years and has been in various leadership roles in the mission, ReachGlobal since 1999. He has also practiced medicine in Golden Valley and Apple Valley, MN.
