Take the Journey from Knowing about God to knowing about God

by David Jeremiah

San Diego: Turning Point for God, 2018

Are you looking for a solid book to give to a new Christian or to someone has been a believer a long time, but remains immature in his faith? If so, this may be your book.

Are you looking for an interesting, biblically-based book to discuss in your small group? If so, once again this may be your book.

The author, Pastor David Jeremiah, has been the senior pastor of Shadow Mountain Community Church in El Cajon, CA for over three decades. He is best known throughout the country for his excellent radio ministry called Turning Point.  In my opinion, Jeremiah is a gifted Bible teacher –always solid in his exposition of the Word, interesting to listen to, and practical in his application. This book is no exception. It is deeply theological, but not written in complicated theological terms. It is chock full of great quotes, interesting illustrations both from contemporary life and the Bible itself. I think Jeremiah is especially gifted in intertwining relevant Bible stories into each theological topic.

The subject of the book is God, the character of God:

KNOWING A HOLY GOD – I can be holy because He is holy! (Psalm 30:4)

KNOWING A FAITHFUL GOD – I can rest upon His promises. (Hebrews 10:23)

KNOWING AN ETERNAL GOD – I can spend eternity with Him! (Psalm 90:2)

KNOWING A CHANGLESS GOD – I can trust His Word! (Numbers 23:19)

KNOWING A POWERFUL GOD – I can conquer any circumstances because of Him! (Jeremiah 32:17)

KNOWING A GOOD GOD – I can depend on God’s goodness through my triumphs and trials. (Psalm 100:5)

KNOWING AN ALL-KNOWING GOD – I can rely on His understanding. (Psalm 147:5)

KNOWING A SOVEREIGN GOD – I can rest in Him because He is in control! (1 Chronicles 29:11)

KNOWING AN EVER-PRESENT GOD – I can be strong, for God is always with me! (Jeremiah 23:23-24)

KNOWING A LOVING GOD – I can know that nothing will separate me from His love. (Romans 8:38-39)

The final chapter of the book, “Knowing God by Name”, is an excellent explanation and celebration of some special names for God in the Bible: Jehovah-Rohi: The Lord My Shepherd,  Jehovah-Jireh: The Lord Shall Provide, Jehovah-Rapha: The Lord Who Heals, Jehovah-Nissi: The Lord My Banner, Jehovah-M’Kaddesh: The Lord Who Sanctifies, Jehovah-Shalom, the Lord Who Is Peace, Jehovah-Tsidkenu- The Lord Who is Righteous, Jehovah-Shammah: the Lord Who Is There.

A personal word: the Lord led me this year (2020) to make it my goal to grow in my trust in Him even through the hard things of life. For the few weeks of the year I had my first “hard” thing – a malaise that seemed to linger. In God’s providence this book THE GOD YOU MAY NOT KNOW was my first book to read in the new year. It was just what I needed because it focused me on God and all His incredible attributes. If God is such a great God, nothing I will ever encounter in life will overcome me. I am determined to trust in Him to the end of my days.

David Jeremiah writes, “Our God can be trusted, always trusted, eternally trusted. He never forgets, never falters, and never fails. He always keeps His Word, and there is no possibility of His changing. Faithfulness is the very clothing God wears, for Isaiah 11:5 says, ‘Righteousness shall be the belt of His loins, and faithfulness the belt of His waist.”
